TRINITY CHURCH

Located on the Back Bay, the Copley Square site was purchased and a gentleman called Henry Hobson Richardson commissioned in 1872 to design Trinity Church. It proved to be such a work of art that it widely regarded as America's masterpiece of ecclesiastical architecture. An 11th-century Romanesque church in Auvergne, France, was to be the major influence on its design.

With its massive granite foundations, and huge lantern tower dominating both internally and externally, more than 2000 wooden piles had to be used for support. Externally, the obvious mixture of granite and pink sandstone works beautifully to give Trinity Church its desired air of importance and authenticity.

The very impressive and detailed polychrome interior, designed by John La Farge, presents a wonderful blend of deep reds and greens highlighted with gold. La Farge paintings from 1876-1877 compliment the arches beneath the magnificent tower. Various stained glass windows, some by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris are scattered around the building. The smaller turquoise lancet windows in the north transept on the west wall are the works of La Farge himself.

Music is of great importance in Trinity Church and the organ pipes in the west end are well worth a look. Trinity Church is also the venue for various concerts, which are always popular and tend to attract large audiences.
A bust of the rector Philip Brooks, created by Daniel Chester French decorates the sacristy. It was this man, Philip Brooks, who composed the famous carol ·O Little Town of Bethlehem. There is also a statue of him located on the grounds.

Apart from worship, the parish is home to a full curriculum of services which are aimed towards the community. Among these services are pastoral care, activities aimed at children and teenagers and a Christian education.
