Boston is renowned for its love of, and great variety of entertainment.
There is literally something here for everyone, young and old. The
list of places to go is almost endless. Whether it be a quiet, romantic
night out, a family night out, a bit of culture or a full-on party
you are looking for, Boston certainly won’t let you down.
From classical music, opera, dance, theatre, cinema, to buzzing
clubs and bars, Boston has it all. It even has the oldest music
organization in the U.S called the Handel & Haydn Society. It
was established in 1815, and regularly performs at Symphony Hall
and Jordan Hall. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is renowned for its
class and the Boston Pops Orchestra is also very well known and
provides many free performances.
The following is just a small, but by no means definitive guide,
of some good places to try out.
- Charles Playhouse(comedy): 74 Warrenton Street
- Hasty Pudding Theatre(plays): 12 Holyoke Street, Cambridge
- Huntington Theatre Company(classic and modern comedies and musicals:
264 Huntington Avenue
- Brattle Theatre(vintage films and film festivals): 40 Brattle
Street, Cambridge
- Harvard Film Archive(daily cult and independent films): 24 Quincy
Street, Cambridge
- Scullers(mainly jazz, reserve in advance: 400 Soldiers Field Road
at River Street Bridge
- Odyssey(evening cruises on 600-passenger yacht plus a Sunday jazz
brunch and weekday lunches, book in advance):
- Atlantic Avenue; sails from Rowes Wharf
- Jillian’s(50 pool tables, 200 high-tech games, 5 bars and
food): 145 Ipswich Street
Before going out, it is advised to check in advance to see what’s
on and to make sure it’s not booked out. Don’t forget
that the legal age for alcohol consumption in America is 21. It
is best to bring a good, up to date form of photograph identification
with you just in case. Although Boston is not known for trouble
at night, it is best where possible to go out in groups.
