BOSTON HARBOUR ISLANDS

There are thirty four islands located within the Greater Boston shoreline. They are rich in culture and have played their part in Boston’s history as sites of defence and prisons. Until 1996, they were largely ambiguous, when they then became a National Recreation Area. Although Boston is a large, multicultural and threiving city, many people don’t realise that not far from downtown Boston, beautiful lush trails and salt marshes, excellent fishing, tide pools, a wonderful old lighthouse and much more are all just waiting to be explored.

Various public and private organizations, along with the National Park Service are involved in the general running and management of the islands, although public involvement is also encouraged.

Each island boasts its own individual characteristics and as they tend to be relatively small, it is possible to visit more than one in a day. The most popular island with tourists and locals is Georges Island, which is a 45-minute boat trip from Long Wharf. This is the site of Fort Warren, which was once used as a POW camp. Visit most of the other islands and you are very likely to have it to yourself.

All the islands have areas designated for picnics, although it is strongly advised that you bring your own food and fresh water. Most of the beaches are pebble dashed, with the exception of Lovells Island, which has an impressive sandy beach with supervised swimming. All the islands are excellent for bird-watching while Bumpkin is renowned for its raspberries. The Boston Light is the oldest lighthouse in America and is located on Little Brewster. It is also the only one still manned and is well worth a visit.

Planning your trip to these wonderful islands is very straightforward. Ferries depart from Long Wharf regularly throughout the day. Tickets for a Harbour Island cruise can be purchased on the day at the waterfront and are reasonably priced. A 90-minute tour called an “Outer Harbour Cruise” can be purchased for $7 from the Bay State Cruise Company. Ferries depart hourly from 10am to 5pm on weekends, weather permitting.
